We already reviewed various Asus smartphones before but this Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is a bit different from all. What makes the phone different from other Zenfone releases previously?
Well, we already have a great competition for the smartphone camera and every smartphone manufacturers are making a huge improvement in the camera department. Interestingly Asus also came with a couple of selfie-centric smartphones. One of them is Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie pro which is a selfie-centric smartphone which has good hardware.
We have a lot of competition in the selfie camera market with Oppo and Vivo. The question is whether Zenfone 4 selfie pro has a great camera and best selfie-centric smartphone? There are many aspects we need to consider before judging a smartphone camera and we can’t say with single word Yes/No.
So, to know the answer. You need to know everything about this smartphone and we did the same. Let’s get started.
Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro Review
Asus Zenfone 4 selfie pro has a uni-body metal design and feels premium. I was never disappointed with the design of Zenfone series and it continues. Smartphone feels easy to hold and has sharp edges on the back which gives a grip.
On the front, we have a 5.5-inch display with the dual front camera (12MP + 5MP), headphone, ambient sensor and a fingerprint scanner. This fingerprint scanner is not a button. We also have capacitive keys on the front which are backlit.
On the back, we have a 16MP camera with LED flash and we have a speaker at the bottom. We have volume and power buttons on the left side and a sim tray on the right.
The power and volume buttons placement is not good and reachable. They must be in the middle but more to the top.
It has 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display which is really great. All the colors are well saturated and look pleasing to eyes. It is a good 1080p AMOLED screen which has great viewing angles and has a brightness of 500 nits. The only disappointing thing about the display is it doesn’t have good sunlight visibility. Apart from that, the display looks stunning.
The interesting thing it also has is Always-on-display feature which good but you can’t do any actions when it is ON.
The camera is the main highlight of Zenfone 4 Selfie pro. It has a 16MP Sony IMX351 rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and 12MP+5MP dual front camera where 12MP has f/1.8 aperture and 5MP has a f/2.2 aperture.
These specifications look great on paper and one important thing that’s advertised wrongly. It has a 12MP + 5MP dual front camera which is advertised as 24MP+5MP camera and that is because it has DuoPixel technology which claims to double the pixels. This is too far from making a 12MP camera to 24MP camera.
Now, let’s review the camera in detail. The rear camera on this smartphone did a really good job with good sharpness but issues with focusing and dynamic range. The colors look good but not too realistic and this is just your preference. You won’t be disappointed with the rear camera in outdoor shots. Below are some shots were taken from the rear camera.
Here comes the front dual camera with front flash. It has a 12MP+5MP front camera and the dual camera setup on this smartphone is not used for the bokeh effect. This setup is used to take normal selfies with the 5MP camera and wide-angle selfies with a 12MP camera. The images taken from both 5MP and the 12MP camera looks good and you also have an option to beautify image. You can even adjust the level of beatification.
You can turn on the DuoPixel option to take selfies which are 24MP in quality and you will only notice the only small difference in quality.
The interesting thing about these rear and front cameras is they have a portrait mode which is too artificial looking and bad. I was not expecting a good portrait from this smartphone the portrait mode done by software and not from dual camera setup.
You can record 4k videos from the rear camera and it doesn’t have EIS or OIS for video stabilization. It has a RAW image file support for editing your images as per your wish. The most exciting option is “Live Beutifixcation” for live videos such for Facebook live and can also use for front camera video recording.
Asus did a great job in the performance department. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 with Adreno 506 GPU coupled with 4GB of RAM. Snapdragon 625 is a powerful midrange smartphone chip which gives an extreme performance.
There is no issue with the performance on regular usage and moderate gaming. Memory management on this device is average considering it has 4GB of RAM. I see some minor frame drops in some heavy games but it’s negligible and it almost played all the games without any issues.
There is another major change you will notice is its software. Asus Zenfone 4 selfie pro now runs on Android 7.1 out of the box with Zen UI on top of it and the interface is so pleasing and easy to use.
There are some handy features included such as twin apps, AudioWizard, Web viewer, easy mode, kids mode, app locker and gestures such as double tap to wake, flip for do-not-disturb etc.
Asus had done a great job with the battery on Asus zenfone 4 selfie pro. It has 3000mAh battery which will last a full day and charges in 2 hours. You will get a screen-on-time of around 4 to 5 hours of moderate usage.
The thing I didn’t like is it comes with micro USB port instead of USB type-c port which is disappointing for the price tag it has.
- 1920x1080p AMOLED Screen
- Good and loud speaker
- Hi-Res Audio support
- Good Battery life
- Good software features
- Fast charging support
- No USB Type-C
- Poor Portrait
- Poor sunlight visibility
- Hybrid sim slot
Asus Zenfone 4 selfie pro is a great smartphone in almost all departments. By considering it’s price tag of Rs. 23,999, you might have to think a lot before buying. If you are only looking a camera smartphone which is more of a selfie-centric smartphone then Asus zenfone 4 selfie pro is the right choice for you. This smartphone gives a great competition for Vivo selfie smartphone.
